Term Explanation
I Symbol used to designate current.
ICEA Insulated Cable Engineers Association.
IEC International Electromechanical Commission.
IEEE Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
IF Intermediate-Frequency.
Impedance (Z) The total opposition that a circuit offers to the flow of alternating
current or any other varying current at a particular frequency. It is
a combination of resistance (R) and reactance (X), measured
in ohms.
Inductance (L) The property of a cicuit or circuit element that opposes a change
in current flow, thus causing current changes to lag behind voltage
changes. It is measured in Henrys.
Induction The phenomenon of a voltage/magnetic field, or electrostatic
charge being produced in an object by lines of force from the
source of such fields.
Inductive Sensor A sensing device that is actuated by a metal object.
Insertion Force The force required to insert a contact into the mating contact.
Insertion Loss A measure of the attenuation of a device by determining the
output of a system before and after the device is inserted into the
system.
Insulation Resistance The resistance measured in ohms at a designated voltage between
two or more conductors separated by the insulation whose
resistance is being measured.
